Overview

A family safari is carefully crafted taking into account the needs of all family members. This includes the diverse needs of 3 generational families. Our objective is to keep the entire family engaged in the safari experience.

Activities

Some activities are designed for the whole family and other activities are custom designed based on the age and interests of each individual. Family adventure travel provides opportunities for interactive participatory age-appropriate activities that allow each family member to create their own safari experience. Activities the entire family participates in are opportunities for the family to bond.

Activities for the Whole Family to Do Together

A family African safari includes game viewing, visits to places such as Olduvai Gorge to see the oldest human footprints going back 3 million years ago, swimming in waterfalls, climbing into ancient crater sites such as Olmoti Crater and Empakaai Crater, visit a local school or orphanage, drift through colorful African markets together, and join campfires under the bright stars in the African bush at night. Children will have the opportunity to hang out with other children their own age, allowing their parents to spend time alone together or with other couples.

Activities for Children

While on safari, we may find children from a local tribe playing soccer or other games and we can join them. At campfires at night the children can reflect on their day’s events, share and exchange experiences with other children on safari, tell stories, and sing.

Cultural Visits

One of the most memorable and enjoyable experiences for everyone in the family is visiting peoples living in remote areas of the African bush. There are a wide range of traditional tribal-based communities to visit such as communities that support themselves through grazing animals and Stone Age hunters and gatherers who go out daily to hunt animals in the bush to catch game using bows and arrows and share their catch with their entire community.
Families on safari can participate with these tribal communities as they collect twigs and firewood to cook the meals, fetch and carry water in gourds for the community, herd animals with the herdsmen, prepare foods for the meals, weave and prepare clothing that originated in the bushmen’s natural habitat, gather honey from craggy rocks or Baobab trees, sit under rock over-hangings that provide shade and shelter during the heat of the day, visit rock paintings and drawings, help prepare and straighten the bows and arrows the hunters use to shoot game, join the bushmen during their hunt for game in the bush, and join tribal chants and dances.
The family can join the circle of tribal host elders and their families to discuss the tribe’s unique way of life, beliefs, rituals, how they use their naturalistic environment as a kind of medicine cabinet for relief for various ailments, and how they adapt in general to their natural environment. Being foreign guests, the tribesmen would be interested to understand the visitor’s way of life, beliefs, customs, and how they survive economically. In this way, both guest and host get to know one another on more of an individual basis. This mutual sharing gives everyone an opportunity to grow.
